Air Pollution in Dearborn, Michigan

An environmental activist group sent a 60-day notice of intent to sue Federal and State environmental regulators and Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. on March 3, 2021. Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. owns and operates the AK Steel plant in Dearborn, Michigan, a facility with a history of violating federal laws and emissions rules.

In the notice, the Sierra Club and Environment Michigan state that the plant exceeds permitted manganese and lead emissions and will likely continue this practice. The notice is the first step required by citizen lawsuits under the Clean Air Act. A federal lawsuit can be filed if AK Steel does not meet with the activist group or begin correcting its violations, including 11 issued by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy since 2019.

Nearby residents are concerned about the impacts of the emissions; however, real estate damages, if any, to these neighboring residential properties have yet to be determined.
