Long Beach Sewage Spill

On February 22, 2021, the Long Beach City Health Office closed all swimming areas west of Belmont Pier in Long Beach, California, after approximately 26,241 gallons of sewage leaked into the Los Angeles River. The spill was caused by construction maintenance on a 48-inch sewer mainline.

This spill comes less than two months after a separate sewage spill that also temporarily closed Long Beach coastal swimming areas. In this instance, 50,000 gallons of sewage leaked into the Los Cerritos Channel after a power loss caused pump station failure on December 26, 2020. Coastal beaches were reopened on January 11, 2021.
